Marian House Bike Safety Event a Hit
On Saturday, August 8, the Marian House hosted the 2nd Annual Bike Safety Event, sponsored by the Academy Optimists Club. Children who are guests of the Marian House Soup Kitchen and the Life Support Center signed up to attend the event, held in the parking lot of the new Marian House complex.
Attendees received a safety briefing from the Colorado Springs Bicycle Police, navigated a safety course set up and overseen by the Optimists, were fitted for a brand new bike helmet by Memorial Hospital Safe Kids Coalition and were able to talk with police officers, climb on official police motorcycles, and explore unmarked patrol cars.
At the end of the event, all the children received a sack lunch provided by Marian House, and a bicycle and a backpack full of school supplies provided by the Academy Optimist Club. They also received a bag from USA Cycling with bicycle key chains, pins, reflectors, and posters; and flashing bike reflectors, safety material for parents and children, pencil bags with small school supplies and coloring sheets from Safe Kids Coalition.
